Dear Agriculture, This week, you and I witnessed an historic moment in American politics with the election of Barack Obama as the next president of the United States.
Today, I need you to join our 2009 Presidential Transition Team and help us work with the new administration to continue our efforts in shaping the future for positive farm and food policy. AFT will get an opportunity during the next 12 weeks to help shape prospects for further farm bill reform during the next decade. I need you to help us make the most of this opportunity by voting for your Farm and Food priorities! As you know, President-elect Obama is inheriting a daunting set of domestic and global challenges. With the recent fluctuation in global food and fuel prices, a shaken economy, and growing domestic and world hunger, our farmers are under enormous pressure to produce food and fuel while minimizing their impact on the environment. With the right policy tools and funding in hand, farmers and farmland can play a huge role toward solving our nation’s greatest economic, environmental, nutrition and energy problems. The 2008 Farm and Food Bill, which we helped win with your support, holds a key to these solutions ... but only if it is implemented properly and receives funding. The significant future reforms set up by our hard fought victories of last year could be lost without a vigilant and sustained effort in the weeks ahead. I am confident that American Farmland Trust can help the Obama Administration fit our progressive view of farm and food policy into its vision of positive change for America, but we need your help. We are asking every one of our supporters to weigh-in and choose their top priorities. We will be presenting our recommendations to the new Administration, so it is vitally important that we hear from you, as well as your friends and family. Please vote right now. Thank you again for your continued support. Sincerely, Jon Scholl President American Farmland Trust
