October 5 “Quiet Confidence”

“For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning and rest
shall you be saved. In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.
. .”
Isaiah 30:15a
His peace is more like a quietly flowing stream than a roaring, raging
river.
Some folks like lots of motion and commotion. They never seem to be
able to sit still for very long—and, when they do, they’re both antsy and
agitated. . .foot a-tappin’. . . fingers strummin’. . .leg bouncin’
up-and-down, etc.

Then, there are others who never seem to get in a hurry. Nothing every
seems to excite them and they’re a lover of “ruts”—i.e., things always being
the same. . . consistency. . .conformity, etc.

While the later demeanor seems more in keeping with today’s Manna than
the first, we should be careful not to equate it with the Lord’s intent
here. Why is that? Because, as someone said, “A rut is nothing more than a
grave with both ends kicked out!” And, quite often, the person who’s
easy-going and resistant to change may be more of an obstacle to God’s will
than the one who’s always on the go and ready to charge hell with a water
pistol—without being told!!

The Lord God was speaking to His People, Israel, in our Manna. And, if
we’d had an audio tape of His Words, it’s likely they would have either been
said in great sorrow or anger. Notice again the words at the end of v.15:
“. . .and you would not.” Instead of trusting Him totally, they’d “added
sin to sin” (v.1) by forming an alliance with Egypt. Likewise, instead of
“asking at God’s mouth” (v.2) and “dwelling in His shadow,” they’d chosen to
“trust in the shadow of Egypt, which would be their confusion” (v.3).

And, then He summed it all up by saying “Because you despise My Word”
(v.12).
Thus, it’s likely His words in our Manna were said in great sorrow of
heart. Instead of loving Him, they left Him. Instead of following Him,
they forsook Him. Instead of joining Him, they jilted Him.

Thus, in mournful tones He was reminding them of what they could have
had if they’d simply continued trusting Him and Him alone: “Rest,
salvation, quietness, confident strength, etc.” Is not the same still true
today, Pilgrim?

Assuredly it is.
If we’re to ever know the Lord—really know the Lord—and experience all
that He has to offer, we must “humble ourselves (the downward step). .
.fervently pray (the inward step). . .seek His Face (the upward step). .
.and turn from our wicked ways (the backward step)” (II Chron. 7:14).

How we need a fresh touch from the Lord—individually, in our homes,
churches, land, etc. But, this will not happen until we’re “still and know
that He is God” (Ps. 46:10). Even then, we must “return and rest in Him.”
Only then will we be “saved and find His quiet confidence our strength of
soul.” Only then.
