August 1                                                                                                                                   “Divine Delays”

                               “. . .And it was now dark and Jesus was not come to them.”

                                                                                                                                                            John 6:17b

 In the darkness of the evening

When the winds are blowing strong,

When the waves are tossing ‘round your boat

And it seems that all has gone wrong.

You lift your voice to Jesus,

But silence is all you hear;

You cry even more the louder

For the Savior to draw near.

But no tender Voice calls out to you

In your sea so stormy tossed;

You feel somewhat forsaken

Even as Jesus did on the Cross.

“My God, my God, why have You forsaken

Me in my hour of need;

I need to feel You close to me—

This is my humble plea.”

But howling winds and crashing waves

Are all that meet your ear;

Then forlorn despair rises within your heart

As you listen to your fears.

But, then, there in the darkness

When your strength is well-nigh spent,

The Risen Lord appears to you

Like an angel from Heaven sent.

He comes to you on the troubled sea

And says, “My child, Peace!  Be still!

Why did you doubt, O weary one?

I said I’d come and I will!

“But, do not fret when the night grows long

And the darkness seems so deep;

For in My delays your faith does grow

And rejoicing even as you weep.”
