June 2 “Our Sole Soul-Reason for Being”

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 2:7
Until we realize this, we’re always searching for the wrong thing and
in the wrong places.
Fellowship.
What is this? Is it where “birds of a feather flock together?” You
know the kind—the kind that look alike. . .chirp alike. . .sit on the same
limb alike. . .eat the same type of bugs and berries alike kind of birds.

Hmm. . .sounds more like “bird-segregation” than it does “fellowship,”
doesn’t it?
So, let’s throw all the birds in the world together: Big birds. .
.little birds. . .brown, red and yellow birds. . .sparrows alongside robins,
peacocks and pigeons. . .doves sitting next to falcons, hawks and eagles.

Ah, now we have fellowship.
Or, do we?
Not likely. If we did that, we’d have total chaos and carnage. Soon,
the only ones left standing (or perching in the case of birds) would be
those with the sharpest beaks and talons.

Why, then, do we think throwing a bunch of folks of every nation, creed
and color together in a room to draw up a peace treaty is going to produce
unity, harmony and fellowship? It’s impossible—unless there’s an INWARD
change!

That’s why Baptists and Methodists and Lutherans and Episcopals and
Catholics can’t get along. We’re too busy sharpening our theological talons
and biting beaks to have fellowship. In fact, even those who claim the same
denominational label so often can’t have fellowship together because they’re
too busy trying to peck each other to death like chickens in a barnyard do
when one of their own gets wounded.

What shall we do? How can we change this? Is there any hope?
Thankfully, today’s Manna reminds us of the solution: Remembering Who
God is and why we were created. The psalmist said it right: “Know ye that
the Lord, He is God; it is He that has made us and not we ourselves. We are
His people and the sheep of His pasture” (Ps. 100:3).

Oh, dear Pilgrim, we can never enjoy fellowship with each other until
we have fellowship with the Shepherd. Until we remember “He is God” and
we’re not, there’ll always be disunity and conflict. Until we surrender to
His Lordship and will, there’ll always be brokenness and disharmony.

When our Creator “breathed into us the breath of life and we became a
living soul,” He instilled within us a part of Himself. And, as Augustine
once said, “Our hearts are restless until they find rest in Thee, O God.”
Help us, O Lord.
