March 26                                                                                                                               “Ever-Present”

“. . .and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.  Amen.”

                                                                                                                                               Matthew 28:20b

When everyone and everything else has forsaken and failed you, He never will.

     Relationships.

We were created for them.  When our Creator reached down into the dust and created Adam, He created him for fellowship, not His amusement or servitude.  When He created Eve out of Adam’s rib, He created her for companionship, not to do Adam’s bidding.  And, they—like us—were created for “communion-union” with the Heavenly Father, which then enables us to enjoy the same with others.

Now, as we know, sin defiled all of this, didn’t it?  Assured it did.  When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, they went from having fellowship with God to hiding from His Presence (Gen. 3:8).  Their sin also ushered in guilt and shame. . .fear and scapegoating. . .and physical and spiritual death (vv.9-24).

From that point on until now one of the “wages of sin” has been separation and loneliness.  Instead of union, we have division.  Instead of communion, we have conflict.  Instead of compassion, we have condescension.

And, the list goes on and on and on.

That’s why today’s Manna is such a welcome one.  The Lord Jesus was/is truly “the Word made flesh” (Jn. 1:14).  Although it’s difficult us to fathom this Incarnation and how Jesus could be fully God and man at the same time, we can rest in the fact that He brought Heaven down to us and revealed to us the Father’s love.  Glory!!

Likewise, His sinless life. . .agonizing death on the Cross. . .and victory over death, hell and the grave reveal why He, alone, is able to help us have fellowship with the Father as He intended from the beginning (I Jn. 1:1-9).  How comforting it is to know this and be able to rest in the assurance that He “is a VERY PRESENT help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1b).  Hallelujah!!

Yes, loneliness is but one of sin’s maladies that afflicts us all.  The psalmist wrote in Ps. 102:6-7, “I am like a pelican (cormorant) of the wilderness.  I am like an owl of the desert.  I watch and am as a sparrow alone upon the housetop.”

Oh, sure, we may hide these feelings behind the mask of cheerfulness and shallow elevator talk; but inwardly our hearts cry out “as deep calls to deep” (Ps. 42:7a) as we wonder if anyone hears. . .or cares.

But, it’s in those moments the Lord Jesus comes to us and whispers, “Fear not, My child—for I Am with you.  From the time you were created in your mother’s womb until now, I’m been with you. . .holding you close when you were afraid. . .comforting you when you were sad. . .and encouraging you when you were discouraged.  Come—rest your weary head upon Me right now.  I’ll not leave you or forsake you.  You can trust Me.  I’m here for you.”
