Tell the House Agriculture Committee: Don’t Take the Easy Way Out Take Action Now—Vote is scheduled for July 16th to 18th! Late last Friday while the rest of Congress was enjoying the Fourth of July holiday, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) released his draft farm bill. Thanks to you and others on AFT’s Action Network, the draft contains funding for many of our priorities including conservation, farm and ranch land preservation, and farmers’ market promotion programs. But our progress could be undermined by proposals to extend outdated and broken subsidy policies—moving policy in the wrong direction and making bad policy worse. Yet the committee continues to ignore calls for significant reform for many national priorities including healthy diets programs, rural development and ending hunger in America. AFT President Ralph Grossi believes, “The nation deserves a better package of farm policies and programs. We challenge the Democratic leadership and the Republicans to not let this opportunity for change pass. Let’s not take the easy way out when we can develop a better farm policy for America’s farmers, consumers and taxpayers.” Contact your Representatives before the vote on Tuesday and urge them to influence the committee to: -
Make subsidy policies more market-oriented; -
Increase funding for programs that are critical for a strong and healthy America including access to local, healthier foods; -
Maintain conservation funding to keep farmland in production so that it can provide America with fresh, healthy and local foods.
Call or send an e-mail to your Representatives today!
