“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. And they truly
were many priests because they were not permitted to continue by reason of
death—but this Man, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable
Priesthood.”
Hebrews 7:22-24
We need never wonder or worry if this Guarantee will ever fail or
expire.
The Epistle to the Hebrews is a wonderful one, for its central focus is
Jesus, the Christ . . .the sinless Son of God. . .the “Lamb of God, Who
takes away the sins of the world” (Jn. 1:29-34). Although we don’t know who
penned these words or the specific audience for whom they were intended,
it’s clear the writer was a Jewish-Christian and his readers were
Jewish-Christians undergoing severe persecution and in danger of recanting
their faith in Christ.
Although today’s Manna is taken from one of the most difficult passages
in Hebrews (ch. 7), it is truly one of the most beautiful ones every given
by our Lord. Why is that? Because it shows the superiority of Christ to
every earthly sacrificial system and an end to the need for an earthly
priest to help us find forgiveness from our sins. Only Jesus and His death
on the Cross can do that (Rom. 5:6-8; Heb. 9:14). And, it’s only by Jesus’
resurrected, indwelling Life that we are assured of eternal life and made
“more than conquerors through Him Who loved us” (Rom. 8:37). Hallelujah!!
Today’s Manna reveals how Jesus—God’s last “Prophet, Priest and King”
(Heb. 1:1-3)—defied the Jews’ logic and tradition by being born of the tribe
of Judah, not the tribe of Levi as their law demanded (Ex. 28-29; Lev.
8:1-9:24; Num. 3:2-3). The writer’s reminding them of Abraham’s “paying a
tithe of the spoils of war” to Melchizedek, the Canaanite/Gentile
Priest-King of Salem (Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 7:1-2) some 400 years before the
Law was given, showed his superiority to the Levitical/Aaronic priesthood
(Heb. 7:4-10).
Likewise, the author also showed them of the insufficiency of the
sacrificial system to forgive one’s sins (vv.11, 18-19a) and the inability
of the Aaronic priesthood to fulfill the Law’s demands because of their
finite lives (vv.12, 23).
But, such was not the case with Jesus, God’s new Great High Priest!
Glory!! His Ministry is superior because it’s based upon “the power of an
endless life” (v.16) and “ushered in a better Hope, by which we’re able to
draw near unto God” (v.19). And, we need never wonder if this will ever
change—for God “swore that the Coming, Anointed One would be a priest
forever” (Ps. 110:4) and is His “Guarantee of a better covenant, because He
continues forever in an unchangeable Priesthood.”
Oh, dear Pilgrim, what does this mean for us?
Simply this: We never need to look for another means to be forgiven
and cleansed from our guilt. Jesus’ death paid it all! Likewise, we never
need to look for another priest to confess to or point us to God—for Jesus
is all we need. . .and we have God’s Word/Oath on it! Isn’t this a “Blessed
Assurance,” Pilgrim?? Amen and amen.
