September 16 “Our Guardian and Guide”

“You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble. You shall
compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. I will instruct you and
teach you in the way which you should go. I will guide you with My eye.”
Psalm 32:7-8
When we walk with Him, we can always count on Him to be our Deliverer
and Director.
More and more these days new cars are coming out with an in-dash GPS
and electronic owner’s aid called “On-Star.” One is programmed to direct
you to your desired destination (including restaurants, banks, gas stations,
etc.) and the other connects you to a 24/7 help center, which can call
emergency personnel in the event of an accident, track your car if it’s
stolen or unlock your car if the keys are still in it.

What will they think of next?
Well, one thing they won’t be able to do is match the beauty and
assurance of today’s Manna. King David evidently wrote this beautiful psalm
during a time of reflective praise and thanksgiving. He begins it by
describing those who are “blessed” (Heb. “esher”—“how happy, to go forward,
be level, relieved, etc.”)” as those “whose transgressions are forgiven and
whose sins are covered” (v.1). He then further amplifies this joyful
condition by adding “Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputes not
iniquity (basically doesn’t hold it against us or keep a record of) and in
whose spirit there is not guile” (v.2). Hallelujah!!

How we should give thanks for His love “which covers a multitude of
sins” (I Pet. 4:8) and for His “mercies by which we’re not consumed and His
unfailing compassions” (Lam. 3:21-23). But, none of these bring any greater
blessing than those found in today’s Manna, which describe our Lord as “our
Hiding Place, our Preserver from trouble and the One Who instructs us and
guides us.”

Oh, dear Pilgrim, a GPS and On-Star may give us some aid and assurance
while driving, but they cannot direct us to Heaven or “preserve us from
trouble” while traveling there. They’re a nice “perk” IF your car has them
and IF your car hasn’t been stolen or destroyed. But, such is never the
case with our great God, our trusted “Deliverer and Director.” A thousand
times no!!

Glory!! It matters not where we go in life or what troublesome
situations we face. He will still be “our Hiding Place” (to shelter us) and
the One Who “preserves (Heb. ‘natsar’—‘guard, conceal, keep, maintain watch
over, etc.’) us from trouble.” And, in the process—even in the midst of our
“storms”—He has His own version of “surround sound” (His “peace that passes
all understanding”—Phil. 4:7) which fills our heart and mind with His
never-ending “songs of deliverance.”

Then, when “the coast is clear” and we venture out. . .and traveling
unknown trails or uncharted seas. . .He will “guide us with His eye”—His
omniscient eye—and tell us exactly which way to go, for He has promised (Ps.
37:23; Prov. 3:5-6). May we rest in these “Pilgrim’s aids” today, knowing
the Lord Jesus is faithful and ever-present.
