May 27 “On Doing It Today”

“But, exhort one another daily, while it is called Today—lest any of you be
hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Hebrews 3:13
If we speak and act when God says, we’ll have no regrets when today
turns into yesterday.
Procrastination.
We all know what this is: Putting off until tomorrow what we should do
today. Having good intentions, but never making them become reality.
Talking a good talk, but not walking a good walk. Having a vision without
an accompanying action plan.

Today’s Manna is very straightforward: “Exhort one another daily,
while it is called Today.” This shows us that exhortation is not an
occasional deed; it’s a daily responsibility that’s so desperately needed in
these days of spiritual lethargy and lukewarmness.

Likewise, there’s equal emphasis upon the urgency of our task: “While
it is called Today.” None of us needs to be told that opportunities lost
are lost forever; neither do we need to be reminded that our lives “are as a
vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14b).

Therefore, we should always be on guard against procrastination,
particularly when it comes to matters of eternity. Who of us can forget the
words of Felix as Paul “reasoned with him of righteousness, self-control and
judgment to come” (Acts 24:25a)? Even now his answer is haunting: “Go your
way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I’ll call for you”
(v.25b).

Oh, dear Pilgrim, the popular song of years ago is still relevant
today: “Tomorrow never comes.” Failure to go where God leads. . .do what
He commands. . .and speak what He says. . .can only lead to a lifetime of
regrets.

That’s why if we have something we need/ought to do, we should to do it
right now. If there’s someone we need to forgive—or from whom we need
forgiveness—we should do it ASAP. If we need to write a letter or make a
phone call to someone, we should do it now; otherwise, the heart will become
increasingly more hardened. And, one day it will cross the point of no
return (as did Judas’) and throughout eternity the recurring song will be
“Wasted years, wasted years, oh how foolish.”

May the Holy Spirit help us even now to stop what we’re doing, lay
aside every distraction, be still and listen. Only then will we “hear His
voice,” calling us to repentance and total surrender. Then, we should spend
some time reflecting on where we’ve been, where we are and where we feel
God’s leading us. In so doing, we’ll make sure that we’ve not fallen prey
to satan’s deceitful ways and in danger of a hardened heart and its mournful
tune of “what might have been.”
