DEAR FELLOW PILGRIM:
Greetings once again in Jesus' precious name. A few weeks ago I
mentioned to you about going to New York to the 150th Anniversary of the
Fulton Street Revival (cf. www.copgny.org) and attending Tuesday night
prayer meeting at Brooklyn Tabernacle in late September. If you'd like more
information, please e-mail me and I'll send you a breakdown of the dates and
costs for the two events. Deadline for signing up and submitting your $275
conference registration is May 31; so, here's hoping to hear from you soon.
Thanks! God bless you!
In Jesus' Precious Love,
Bro. Tom

May 16 “Shadow-Dwellers”

“He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the
shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1
We need never fear when we’re held in the hollow of His hand.
Down through the years one of children’s favorite games has been
hide-n-seek. Even now we can remember those days when we’d run like crazy
to our secret “hiding place” as the one who was “it” counted to 100. And,
we can also remember how we held our breath when he drew near, lest he hear
our rapid breathing or attempts to suppress a giggle.

Yes, “hide-n-seek” was a fun game indeed.
But, that’s not what the psalmist had in mind when he talked of “the
secret place of the Most High” in today’s Manna. Instead, his reference to
our “abiding under the shadow of the Almighty” gives a completely different
picture altogether.

Perhaps he was thinking of God’s words to Abraham about His being his
“shield and exceeding great reward” (Gen. 15:1b). Or, maybe he was thinking
about the God of Abraham being our “high and strong tower” (Ps. 18:2; 61:3;
144:2; Prov. 18:10). Or, perhaps he envisioned this secret place as God’s
being our “Refuge and Strength—a Very Present Help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1).

Or, maybe it was something completely different from these.
Could it be that this inspired song-writer was reflecting on the shadow
cast by the cherubims’ wings atop the ark of the covenant’s mercy seat,
called “The Dwelling Place of the Most High”? If so, what better place to
dwell in than this “secret place” known only to those who are His children?
Glory!!

Jesus’ lamenting over Jerusalem’s unbelief included His desire to have
been like a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings in a time of
danger—“but you would not” (Mt. 23:37). Even though a hen’s wings are
little protection against a predator’s sharp teeth or talons, such a
“gathering in” is a beautiful picture of God’s sustaining grace and
protection.

Although by nature we much prefer lofty mountaintops to dark valleys,
the fact remains that some of the prettiest flowers in the world grow in
shadows, not bright sunlight. Could it be that this is one of the reasons
our Lord is called “the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the valleys” (Song of
Sol. 2:1)? And, could it be that this was what inspired David to say with
great confidence, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil—for Thou art with me” (Ps. 23:4a)?

Oh, dear Pilgrim, when we realize our “secret place” is, as the song
says, “Near to the heart of God,” we need never fear. Though dark clouds of
grief or menacing clouds of fear may cover our path from time-to-time, do
not fret—for “he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty.” Amen and amen. Hallelujah!!
