Subject: Morning Manna (Apr. 11); BP: I Cor. 15:51-58; RBTTY: Lk. 11:1-28; I Sam. 17-18

April 11 “God’s Great ‘Put-Ons’”

“For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on
immortality. So, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and
this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the
saying that is written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory’.”
I Corinthians 15:53-54
For now we have to “put up with” some things, but one of these days
we’ll enjoy our Lord’s wonderful “put ons.”
Have you ever noticed how much pretending or “putting on” there is in
life? Think about it: A person’s feeling miserable, but “puts on” a happy
face when going out in public. A friend’s being facetious about a certain
thing, but his wry smile and twinkle-in-the-eye makes us say, “Why, you’re
putting me on!” Or, a person who’s a little bit too impressed with himself
and acts condescending toward others is said to be “putting on airs.”

Thus, in this life we usually try to “grin-and-bear it” when dealing
with “put-ons.” However, today’s Manna is a glorious one that talks about
God’s glorious “put-ons” that await all those who trust in Christ.

Look at this wondrous list once again:
“For this corruptible (Grk. ‘phthartos’—‘decayed, perishable, pine or
waste away, shrivel, ruined, defiled, etc.’) must put on incorruption.” No
one needs to explain this one to us, do they? Not hardly—especially when we
look in a mirror and see our body wasting away right before our eyes or
watch a loved one’s body being ravaged by pain and disease. But, as the old
Gospel song says, “This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise to seize the
everlasting Prize.” Hallelujah! What a glorious day that will be!

“And this mortal (Grk. ‘thnetos’—‘liable to die, temporal, etc.’) must
put on immortality.” Again, this beautiful truth from our Lord is
self-explanatory. How we need to remember this when we find ourselves in
the “Great Not Yet” (Heb. 2:8c) and feel dark despair starting to rise up in
our soul. As someone once said, “Be patient, Pilgrim—you’re not Home yet!”
Glory!!

The Apostle Paul then borrows one of Isaiah’s prophecies to further
drive the point on: “Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is
written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory’” (cf. Is. 25:8). The Apostle
John also alluded to this passage in his inspired prophecy of what awaits us
(Rev. 21:4).

Oh, dear Pilgrim, isn’t Heaven going to be a wonderful place? Won’t it
be glorious to never see a dead animal on the side of the road. . .or ever
have to visit the hospital, nursing home or funeral home again. . .or feel
sin’s ravages on our own body? Amen and amen!

Therefore, until that Day we should continue “putting up” with life’s
trials, troubles and tribulations—confident that the time will come when
God’s great “put-ons” finally become reality. Let’s say it one more time:
“Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!!”
