Subject: Morning Manna (Oct. 12); BP: Mt. 4:12-17; RBTTY: Col. 4; Is. 39-40
October 12 “Repent!”
“From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent—for the Kingdom of
Heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:17
His message hasn’t change; the question is, “Do we believe Him?”
Dear Pilgrim, did you know that Judgment is coming soon? Do you hear
the rumblings of God’s Chariot on the distant horizon as He prepares to put
an end to the sin and lawlessness that run rampant in every corner of our
world?
Oh, sure—there have always been calls for repentance and revival in
every generation.
Noah’s generation needed them. Abraham’s generation needed them.
Isaiah, Jeremiah and Hosea’s generations needed them. Jesus’ generation
needed them. Why, then, do we think that ours doesn’t?
It was no accident that John the Baptist quoted the prophet Isaiah when
he burst on the scene, crying “Repent—for the Kingdom of God is at hand.
Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight” (Is. 40:3; Mt. 3:2-3).
And, it’s no accident that Jesus’ first message after His victory in the
wilderness was “Repent!”
Throughout His ministry Jesus and His disciples called for a “turning
from sin and a turning to God” (Mk. 6:12). And, to be sure, the Good News
of the Gospel was central and foremost in their preaching. However, there
could be no transformation without reformation—i.e., there could be no
“living in the Spirit” while still “walking in the flesh” (Rom. 8:1-11).
And, there certainly can be no entrance into God’s Kingdom when there’s been
no change in one’s heart and mind (Gal. 5:19-21; Rev. 21:8).
Many there are who are deceived, resting in the illusion that they’re
right with the Lord because of their baptism, church membership, good works,
etc.; however, Jesus said “There’ll be many in that Day who’ll say ‘Lord,
Lord’ who’ll not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mt. 7:21a).
Why is that?
“Because they don’t do the will of His Father, Who is in Heaven” (Mt.
7:21b), preferring instead to continue on in their self-righteous,
unrepentant ways. But, “Woe to them who are at ease in Zion” (Amos 6:1),
for the God of Righteousness and Justice “searches the hearts and minds of
every person” and “rewards everyone according to his works” (I Chron. 28:9;
Rev. 2:23).
Oh, dear Pilgrim, are you living a life of holiness? Does your heart
ache over the condition of our world and the carnality of our churches?
Have you been weeping over the lostness of your family members, neighbors,
co-workers, etc., knowing that they, too, “shall also likewise perish unless
they repent” (Lk. 13:3, 5)?
May the Holy Spirit give us a glimpse of the horrors of hell and the
eternal agony that awaits those who refuse to repent (Lk. 16:23-24;
20:11-15). Then, may we not rest so long as one soul lingers outside the
Ark of His Salvation (Mt. 24:4-44).
