Subject: Morning Manna (July 17); BP: Ps. 19; RBTTY: Acts 20:17-38; Ps. 18-19
July 17 “Blessed Assurance”
“. . .the Testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the
simple”
Psalm 19:7b
We never have to wonder if it’s true or not.
Trustworthy.
Is there any word that more aptly describes God’s character and
conduct? Not likely—although words like “reliable. . .dependable. .
.faithful. . .honorable, etc.” do come to mind. Regardless, all of these
point to the truth contained in today’s Manna concerning “the Testimony of
the Lord.”
The Hebrew word “ ‘eduwth” is used here for “Testimony” and also means
“witness, recorder, to repeat, testify, give a record of, etc.” Thus, it’s
the picture of one giving a first-hand, eyewitness account of something he’s
seen or heard.
In its context of describing God’s Word, the psalmist is reminding us
of Who God is and what He has promised. The author of Hebrews wrote that
“pleasing faith” (Heb. 11:6) is anchored in these two attributes and
unwaveringly clings to them.
Therefore, we should not be surprised that David, the shepherd-king,
felt the same way. He had no doubts the God of Abraham was the same One
Who’d created everything (except man) by speaking. . .led Noah to spend 120
years building the ark in implicit obedience to God’s command. . .called out
Abraham to follow Him “without knowing where he was going” (Heb. 11:8). .
.placed Joseph in a strategic position in Pharaoh’s court to preserve his
family. . .used Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egyptian
bondage. . .and enabled him to kill the lion, bear and giant by simply
trusting in Him.
How wonderful it is when our “testimony is sure (Heb. ‘aman’—‘to build
up, support, faithful, unchanging, steadfast, etc.’)” because we know “the
Testimony of the Lord is sure.” This “confident confession” can only arise
after having found Him faithful in “fiery furnaces…dark valleys. . .Wits’
End Corner (Ps. 107:27), etc.” But, once we’ve realized He is our “Anchor
of Hope” (Heb. 6:18-19), we’ll never again find ourselves wondering if He’ll
be there when we need Him. Hallelujah!!
One of “faith’s fringe benefits” in this is His “making wise the
simple.” At first glance, the word “simple” seems to imply someone
unassuming or fairly straightforward; however, when we realize the Hebrew
word used here (“pethiy”) also means “silly, foolish, easily seduced,
deluded, enticed, etc.,” we catch a whole new picture all together.
Suddenly, we realize our Lord’s “Testimony” helps guide our steps and
guards us from the devil’s wiles. By “hiding His words in our heart, we’re
able to keep from sinning against Him” (Ps. 119:11). That’s why it’s
important for us to both know and apply His Word in our daily lives. May
the Holy Spirit help us to live in that blessed assurance today, while
encouraging others to do so as well.
